Task 2 : Decisive Moment

Task 2
Week 7
This week, Mr. Hafiz gave us a new assignment: 'Editorial Illustration' or 'Decisive
Moment' where we have to pick an Urban Legend of our choice using Adobe Illustrator.
What is 'Editorial Illustration'? Editorial illustrations are created to give written content
a visual element for use on websites, magazines, and newspapers. This accomplishes
two key goals: it draws the reader in and helps provide the piece a fresh viewpoint while
they browse the publication.
The Urban Legend I have chose for this assignment is the 'Okiku Doll', based in
Japan. The tale dates back to 1918 when a boy purchased the doll for his younger sister,
noting that they both had bob haircuts. The little girl was infatuated with the doll, and
they were inseparable. Tragically, a short time later, the girl passed away from an
illness. Her family displayed the doll, named Okiku, on an altar in remembrance of
their daughter and noticed that the doll’s hair was growing. They concluded that their
daughter’s restless spirit was inhabiting the doll.
Before proceeding with the sketches, I looked up images that matches my Urban
Legend so I get an idea on how to go on with the sketches.

In these sketches, I want to convey the whole story of the Okiku Doll where the parents
grow older in each sketch and most importantly how the doll's hair keep growing.
This was my initial final PNG for this assignment but as I looked at it, I realised that this
doesn't really show the main point of the urban legend, which is the doll's hair growing
longer and longer, which brings us to the second sketches.

Instead of having the whole family in the PNG, I decided to only focus on the Okiku Doll
and its hair.

Week 9 After brainstorming what I want to animate, I started to draw it out on Illustrator. ![]() | |

After drawing it all out, I took all the PNGs and placed it into Photoshop, where I made
the GIF for this assignment.

In this gif, I drew scissors as well to clearly show that the doll's hair will keep growing no
matter what but I felt like the scissors wasn't really necessary for the Decisive Moment.
So I created another version of my GIF which definitely looks better and can better
convey Decisive Moment.
