Introduction to Photoshop 3
What is Adjustment Layer?: Photoshop's Adjustment Layers are a collection of
incredibly helpful, non-destructive image editing tools that
allow you to make colour and tone modifications to your
image without permanently altering its pixel
composition. You can alter, remove, or restore your original
image at any time using the adjustment layers. This is a
must-know tip that will improve the flexibility and
efficiency of your Photoshop workflow.
Basic Understanding of Adjustment Layer: A new layer will overlay your original image
when you add an adjustment layer, and the
Properties panel for the adjustment type
you've chosen will appear. You can change
your adjustment layer in the Properties
panel, which will change your image.
1. Brightness / Contrast: An image's tonal range can be adjusted using brightness and
contrast. The highlights and shadows in the image can be
adjusted with the brightness and contrast sliders, respectively.
2. Level: By modifying the levels of the highlights, midtones, and shadows of an image,
levels change the tonal values in that image. One of the most often used tools in
the adjustment layer panel is the levels tool; a little bit of level adjustment will
go a long way towards image correction.

3. Curves: The most effective and accurate tool for modifying the tones in an image is a
curve, which allows you to make adjustments at any number of points across
the complete tonal range of the picture.

4. Exposure: Exposure has three sliders that allow you to alter exposure levels: Gamma,
Offset, and Exposure. Exposure will adjust only the highlights of the image,
Offset adjusts the mid tones and Gamma will adjust the dark tones only.
5. Selective Colour: Without changing the other primary colours in your image, the

Selective Colour adjustment layer allows you to adjust the amount of
one basic colour only.

Filter
What is Filter?: A key feature of Adobe's graphics editor is the ability to modify
photographs using filters. There are filters to add blur, alter colour, or
provide entirely other image effects. For this use, Photoshop provides an
almost infinite range of filters.

Practical
Mr. Fauzi chose composition #1 as my best work to use for this exercise: Adjustment
Layer and Filter. In this exercise, we were just tasked to play around with the
adjustment layer and filter until we were satisfied with our results.
