Digital Surrealism
Realism vs Surrealism - Realism: Topics covered include those of the everyday,
commonplace world, or "reality." Almost without fail,
it adopts a mundane and unremarkable subject and
concept. Being creative isn't necessary because it's not
'real'.
- Surrealism: Realism with a twist. It seeks to disrupt the
commonplace and what we call reality while
exploring the subconscious mind, with subjects
focussing on dream-images.
Surrealism
Surrealism rejects reason. Surrealist art, which translates to 'super-realism' in French, is
characterised by unusual visuals and bizarre juxtapositions and is inspired by dreams
and the subconscious mind.
Salvador Dalí and other surrealists advocated for dream imagery and free association,
fueled by Freud's ideas and the defiant Dada art movement.
Dadaism
An anti war art movement with art works that is satirical and nonsensical in nature.
Salvador Dalí was a Spanish Surrealist painter and printmaker known for exploring
subconscious imagery.
What is Digital Surrealism?
The surrealist movement was characterised by an emphasis on the artist's own ideas as
mediums of expression. Today, surrealism is considered a leading trend in digital art.
How to Start Creating Surrealism Artwork?
- Dream like scenes and symbolic images
- Unexpected, illogical, juxtapositions
- Bizzare assemblages of ordinary objects
- Primitive or child like designs
With Photoshop, even someone with a basic understanding of photomontage may easily
create surrealist visuals.

Project 2B
This week's exercise is Conceptual Product Photoshoot. First and foremost is to create a
conceptual product photoshoot using various lighting techniques. Next is to find an
interesting subject and shoot it using suitable lighting techniques. Third, is to create a
photo manipulation of the subject using Photoshop to make it interesting. Finally,
explain the concept and the process of the development.
