Project 4 : Self-Titled
Instructions
Project 4
For this final project: Self-Titled, it is an exploratory project designed to help students
reflect their personalities and individuality via self-expression in digital art. We were
tasked by Mr Fauzi to create a poster and animated video for this project. This project
can be split into 3 parts, the first: Idea Development which includes a biography about
myself and also a statement about my work. The second, Design Direction which
includes creating a sketch for and poster for my work. Last but not least the third part,
Execution and Post Production where you import the final poster to After Effects to
develop the composition techniques using Digital Photography & Graphic Design.
Part 1 (Idea Development)
Biography of myself: My name is Andrea, full name Andrea Choo Qin Hui. Turned 19 in
April & was born and raised in KL. My hobbies includes listening to
music and also designing. People usually perceive me as someone
who is scary and angry because of my face but once someone gets
to know me, I’m the complete opposite. As I’m somewhat of an
introvert, I don’t usually make a lot of friends but I’m trying to fix
that bad habit of not talking to anyone new and trying to make
more and more new friends these upcoming months in
Taylors! One of my biggest wish is to own a cat and it has been my
biggest wish since I could even remember. Since my parents or my
mother mainly, think that cats are a big responsibility (she’s not
wrong) and has been saying no to all my begging to get a cat.
Especially being an only child, I think having a cat could keep me
company while my parents are at work
Summary: Inverted and scary but not towards cats.
Statement about Work: I want to express how music has helped me with everything,
especially gaining peace with the world. I have been in love with
the coquette aesthetic these days and I am inspired to create
something similar for my self-titled project. I love the colour
pink and ribbons / bows, so I want to incorporate that into my
poster. When I was going through a rough patch of my life,
music has really helped me cope and I have always felt inner
peace while listening to music. Not only that, when I listen to
music, it makes me feel like I’m unstoppable in a way, like I’m
the main character of everyone’s story not just mine.
Summary: Why go to therapy when there’s a free solution: MUSIC!

Ideas & Sketches:

Figure 2.1 Sketch #1 |
In this initial sketch, I have included everything that I wanted, which was pink and
ribbons. As I looked at it, I realised that there was nothing that signifies music except
for the headphones.
The final sketch makes it clearer what I want to show in my poster.
Photoshoot & Chosen Images:

After finalising my sketch, I went ahead and took a few pictures for my poster and
chose 3 that I liked the best:

Poster Designing in Photoshop:
Photoshop and begin removing the background from all the images. Once done, I
exported them all into a new document with the required size (1080 x 1920 px).

them luminosity at 30%.

Figure 2.8 Background |
As I wanted the coquette aesthetic, I chose a pink to white gradient fill as my
background and found an overlay that I thought would be similar to the vibe I'm going
for.

Figure 2.9 Images + Background Together |
Since the main image at the front was too bright, I adjusted the brightness and the
curves of it to match the background and the aesthetic of everything.

Figure 2.10 Before & After Brightness and Curves |
As shown in my sketches, I wanted to add a border to my poster. So, I went on
Pinterest to search for one that I liked.

Figure 2.11 Border |
The black behind the border is used just to show the white border. Once pasted onto
my poster, all you could see was black so I set it to screen.

As I felt like the main image was kinda empty, I added the same Gradient Fill onto the
image. It made it more pink which I loved!

Figure 2.14 Drawings on Illustrator |
After I felt like my poster was done, I went to Illustrator to draw out the ribbons and
the line for the music notes. I tried drawing the music notes as well, but it did not look
that good so I decided to Google music notes icon.
As I searched, I found a really cute one on Freepik: Music Notes Icon.
For the ribbons, I created a new Adjustment Layer on the existing layers. I made the

As the bows were a different colour, I added the same Brightness & Curves to it. I also
changed the colour of the line and music notes for it to match the theme of my poster.
Once, I was satisfied with my work, I saved it and exported it to After Effects to start
animating.

Part 3 (Animation)
Before starting my animation, I went to Youtube to watch a video on how to make my
image blink and move.
Figure 3.1 How to: Animate Pictures

Figure 3.2 Animating the Eyes |
After watching that, I begin my animation process. Following the tutorial, I start off by
duplicating the image layer and using the Pen Tool to trace out the eyebags on the
same duplicated layer. Then I used the Liquify Tool to close the eyes just like the
tutorial said, but I realised because of the image I chose it was harder. So I used the Pen
Tool to trace out the eyelashes and only then using the Liquify Tool to bring the
eyelashes downwards first. Finally, I used the Liquify Tool to bring the eyelids down.

Now, I want to make the image move. Just like the tutorial, I used the Puppet Tool to
pin where I wanted the movement at: both hands, the neck and between the eyebrows.
The yellow circles show where I placed the Puppet pin.

Figure 3.5 Animation of the Music Notes |
For the music notes, I wanted it all to move around the head which was pretty hard. It
took me quite long to animate all of it. It isn't the the smoothest but I've tried my best
with the amount of time I had.

colour of the Adjustment Layer black and placed the Displacement Map Effect onto it.
The movement of the Displacement Map was exactly what I wanted for the ribbons.

Figure 3.10 Saturation |
I wanted to transition from black and white to coloured so I went onto Youtube to find
a tutorial. First, I created a new Adjustment Layer to place the Lumetri Colour Effect
onto it. And since I wanted the black and white to stop only when the blinking starts so
I made the layer shorter. Then, I clicked the stopwatch icon on Saturation at the start of
the video at 0 Saturation and at the end of the Adjustment Layer at 100 Saturation,
which makes it a smooth transition from Black and White to Colours.
