LECTURES

Week 7 (Colour Grading vs Colour Correction)
The Basics of Digital Video Colour

The process of properly colouring your footage is made up of three main interconnected

tasks. Like any other recipe or formula, it is a general rule to do each of these tasks in

their proper order, step by step.

             Digital video colouring steps:

    1. Establish picture profile
    2. Colour correct footage
    3. Colour grade footage
            What is Colour Hue?
Hue refers to the colour itself. In simplest terms, it’s the difference between red and
blue. Your hue can then be altered by saturation and brightness, which we'll cover as
soon as we give you a few paragraphs on hue.

Together, hue, saturation, and brightness are known as "HSB." This combination

makes up the basic colour concerns of any video image.

            What is Colour Saturation?

Saturation refers to the intensity of the colour. This is determined by the amount of gre
in the hue, from pure grey to a vivid colour. If you add pure white or pure black to your
colour, you'll get a darker or lighter brightness value.

            What is Colour Brightness?
Brightness refers to the level of light in your colour, this determines the difference
           between two colours.

EXERCISES

Week 7 (Colour Correction vs Colour Grading)
Quiz 5

Project 2 Exercise 1 - Production Shoot
Before doing the colour grading task, me and my fellow teammates had to reshoot the clips of
Everything Everywhere All At Once given by Mr. Martin.

Figure 3.1 Shoot Schedule

Seen above is our shoot schedule made by Iman, our assistant director. Of course, before starting
anything, we had to finalise our roles for this shoot which can be seen in the image below.

Figure 3.2 Crew List

As I'm camera assistant and also boom operator, I have to help Lina when she needs any help
from me and also hold the mic to help Terence get the audio from the actors. The mic I had to
hold was heavier than I expected and I had to make sure the mic wasn't visible on the camera. In
my opinion, filming the clip where Waymond is just standing there while the camera moves back
was the hardest for me as I had to time everything correctly and make sure I don't move it too
much until Kaho, our Waymond was out of frame.

Figure 3.8 Audio

After receiving all the clips and audio, I started combining the clips and audio together. To
find the correct audio for the chosen clips was slightly difficult for me as there were so many
audios in the google drive for me to listen to and figure out if the audio matches up to the audio
in the clips, therefore this definitely took me way longer than I expected to finish editing
            everything together.

Now onto colour grading, I tried my best to make the colours of the scenes we shot match the
original ones. Although I felt like it was slightly hard for me to completely match it, I tried
my best to replicate it as close as possible.

After receiving the word from Mr. Martin where we could try a more creative editing style like
Example 1 and Example 2, I decided to add more effects and make the production shoot more
            cinematic.

Project 2 Exercise 2 - TikTok/Insta Slides
For this project, I paired up with Aidi. We had many ideas for this project but we eventually
chose to go with the 'Dabloon' trend on TikTok, where people will post images or videos of cats
with the caption '4 Dabloons', where you can spend it on imaginary goods on other TikToks the
            viewers come across.

REFLECTIONS

Experience: During the filming process for the remake of EEAAA, I had alot of fun. I enjoyed filming everything and it was a great experience all together.

Observations: To make a professional film, there are many roles for people to film and without a specific role, it can become chaotic and inefficient. Each role is critical to the success of the film.

Findings: Before filming, there should be a plan to proceed before doing anything and when filming as this ensures that everyone involved knows their roles and responsibilities. While creating your own idea for a video/film, you must have a storyboard to make the story easier to understand and film.
